Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th of November, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now OnestiGheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 during an Olympic competition. Bela Karalyi discovered Comaneci when she was six. She would later become the Romanian gymnastics coach. She first competed at the championships for juniors from Romania in 1969, she was 13th. Then in the year 1970, she won. At her first international event in 1972 at a pre-Olympic Junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she was awarded three gold medals. In 1973 and 1974 she was overall junior champion. In 1975, she won 4 gold and 1 silver at her first senior international competition. Lyudmila Torishcheva was a five-time European Champion. In 1976 she became the first person in the world who used a double backwards salto to dismount from parallel bars.
